Stephen Fernicola

Dr. Stephen Fernicola is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. He is dedicated to helping patients return to the activities and lifestyles they enjoy. He combines advanced orthopedic training, military medical experience, and a personalized, patient-centered approach to care.

Dr. Fernicola earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Doctor of Medicine from Georgetown University, followed by orthopedic surgery residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He then served as a staff orthopedic surgeon in the United States Navy at Naval Hospital Jacksonville and Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, caring for active-duty service members, veterans, and civilian patients.

He completed his sports medicine fellowship at the University of South Florida and the Florida Orthopaedic Institute, where he developed advanced expertise in the treatment of sports injuries and other musculoskeletal conditions. His research has focused on orthopedic sports medicine, trauma, infection prevention, and advancements in musculoskeletal care, with multiple peer-reviewed publications and national presentations.

Dr. Fernicola continues to serve in the United States Navy Reserves and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, and Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Fernicola believes the best orthopedic care starts with understanding each patient’s goals. He is committed to providing evidence-based treatment, advanced surgical techniques, and individualized care designed to relieve pain, restore function, and help patients get back to doing what they love. He and his wife are excited to return to the Jacksonville area, where he looks forward to caring for the community he has proudly served. In his free time he enjoys spending time with family, traveling, being out on the water, and playing golf.
